CT protection

Spark Gap A046 CT protector

Made by Alltec Sistemas, the Spark Gap A046 protects the secondaries of metering and protection current transformers (CTs) from the overvoltage caused when the circuit is opened by mistake. A single unit protects up to 5 CTs.

How the Spark Gap protects the CT

Protector for metering and protection CTs.

The Spark Gap protects the secondary windings of metering or protection current transformers (CTs), preventing damage if a secondary circuit is opened by mistake.

When the open-secondary voltage exceeds 3,500 V peak, the spark-gap cartridge fires and protects the CT. If the discharge persists, after 5 to 10 seconds the cartridge fuses and permanently short-circuits the CT. That cartridge must then be replaced with a new one, a quick and simple swap.

The Spark Gap comes fitted with 5 spark-gap cartridges, so a single unit protects 5 current transformers.
